BACKLAND: spatially explicit and high‐resolution pollen‐based BACKward LAND‐cover reconstructions

Studying the interactions between humans, land‐cover and biodiversity is necessary for the sustainable management of socio‐ecosystems and requires long‐term reconstructions of past landscapes, improving the integration of slow processes. The main source of information on past vegetation is fossil pollen, but pollen data are biased by inter‐taxonomic differential production and dispersal. The landscape reconstruction algorithm (LRA) approach is the most widely used to correct for these biases. The LOVE algorithm (LOcal Vegetation estimates), the second step in the LRA approach, also estimates the spatial extent of the local vegetation reconstruction zone (the relevant source area of pollen, RSAP). While LRA estimates have already been integrated into certain past land‐cover mapping approaches, none have been designed to allow the diachronic reconstruction of a land‐cover mosaic over the long term combining the following points: the direct integration of LOVE estimates as a source of variability in the composition and distribution of pollen taxa, without multiple scenarios, and the integration of spatiotemporal autocorrelation in the taxa distribution between periods. Here, we propose an innovative approach for BACKward LAND‐cover reconstruction (BACKLAND), combining these points and estimating the past land‐cover mosaic within a set of RSAPs. Based on three stages using parsimonious assumptions and easy‐to‐implement probabilistic and statistical tools, this approach requires LOVE estimates of sites close enough to each other for their RSAPs to overlap, botanical data, a digital elevation model and two recent land‐cover maps. Developed and tested on a small study area within the mountain landscape of the Bassiès valley (French Pyrenees), BACKLAND achieved the reconstruction of a past land‐cover map representing eight land‐cover types at a spatial resolution of 20 m with a good level of accuracy. We show in this study the originality of this approach and discuss its potential for palaeoenvironmental studies, historical ecology and the management of socio‐ecosystems.

Evaluation of relative pollen productivities in temperate China for reliable pollen-based quantitative reconstructions of Holocene plant cover.

The Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm (LRA) is regarded as the soundest approach for quantifying taxon-specific plant cover from pollen data. The reliability of relative pollen productivity (RPP) estimates is fundamental in the accuracy of quantitative vegetation reconstruction using the LRA approach. Inconsistent RPP estimates produced by different studies can cast doubt on the reliability and applicability of quantitative vegetation reconstruction. Therefore, it is crucial that the RPP estimates are evaluated before being applied for quantitative vegetation reconstruction. We have tested two alternative approaches, namely, a leave-one-out cross-validation (LOO) method and a splitting-by-subregion strategy, using surface pollen assemblages and the REVEALS model-the first step in the LRA-to evaluate the reliability of RPPs estimates of 10 target taxa obtained in the cultural landscape of Shandong. We compared the REVEALS estimates (RVs) with observations of regional vegetation abundance (OBVs) and pollen proportions (PPs). The RVs of all taxa are generally closer to OBVs than PPs, and the degree of similarity depends strongly on the abundance of individual taxa in plant and pollen; taxa dominant in the region show the highest similarity between RVs and OBVs, such as Artemisia, Poaceae, and Humulus. The RVs of all herb taxa except Humulus and Asteraceae SF Cichorioideae are slightly overrepresented, and the RVs of all tree taxa are underrepresented except for Castanea. The comparison of RVs with OBVs collected from different spatial extents shows that the RVs of all herb taxa are more similar to OBVs collected from shorter distances (100km and 75km for the entire region and the subregion, respectively), whereas the RVs of all tree taxa are more similar to OBVs collected from longer distances (150km and 100km for the entire region and the subregion, respectively). Furthermore, our findings highlight the importance to test different sizes of area for vegetation surveys for evaluation of the RVs given that the appropriate size of vegetation survey may vary between low pollen producers (mainly herbs) and high pollen producers (mainly trees). We consider that the LOO strategy is the best approach in this case study for evaluating the RPP estimates from surface moss polsters. The evaluation confirms the reliability of the obtained RPP estimates for their potential application in quantitative reconstruction of vegetation abundance in temperate China.

3000 Years of past regional and local land-use and land-cover change in the southeastern Swedish coastal area: Early human-induced increases in landscape openness as a potential nutrient source to the Baltic Sea coastal waters

Reconstructions of past land use and related land-cover changes at local and regional scales are needed to evaluate the potential long-term impacts of land use on the coastal waters of the Baltic Sea. In this purpose, we selected the Gamleby area at the Swedish Baltic Sea coast for a case study. We use a new, high resolution pollen record from a small lake (Lillsjön) located 3.6 km NNW of the bay Gamlebyviken and detailed analysis of the available archeological data to reconstruct local land-use changes over the last 3000 years. To estimate land-cover change at local (2–3 km radius area) and regional (50 km radius area) scales we use four additional, published pollen records from two small and two large lakes (25–70 km S of Lillsjön) and the Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm, a pollen-vegetation modeling scheme. Results show that regional and local (small lakes Lillsjön and Hyttegöl) land-cover changes are comparable over the last 1500 years (Late Iron Age to present), and that landscape openness was much larger locally than regionally (difference of 20–40% cover over the last 500 years). The periods of largest potential impacts on the Gamlebyviken Bay from regional and local land use are 200–950 CE (Late Iron Age) and 1450 CE to present, and of lowest potential impacts 950–1450 CE. The question on whether the large landscape openness 1150–50 BCE and significant afforestation 50 BCE–200 CE reconstructed for Lillsjön’s area are characteristic of the Gamlebyviken region will require additional pollen records in the catchment area.

Spatial and temporal patterns of upland vegetation over the last 200 years in the northern pyrenees: Example from the Bassiès valley, Ariège, France

Quantitative estimates of past vegetation with a clearly defined spatial scale are a critical step to better understand the patterns and processes of changes in vegetation and land-cover over time and space. However, such estimates are difficult to obtain from pollen data due to their lack of spatial dimension and the inter-taxonomic differences in pollen production, dispersal, and deposition mechanisms. This study assesses the potential of the Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm (LRA) to reconstruct the spatial and temporal patterns of upland vegetation in the Bassiès Valley, northern Pyrenees over the last 200 years, a period characterised by a decline of traditional pastoral activities. We used well-dated pollen records from eight bogs and ponds and vegetation and land-cover data within a 1-km radius from each site to evaluate the LRA-based reconstruction of local land-cover. The LRA approach was then used to reconstruct the 200-year history of local land-cover dynamics at 10 to 20-year intervals around each site in relation to land-abandonment. Our study shows that in addition to allowing long-term reconstruction, LRA estimates (1) are more sensitive to vegetation composition changes over time and space compared to historical land-cover maps and pollen percentages, and (2) improve the reconstruction of past local vegetation compared to pollen percentages alone. The LRA results reveal site-specific land-cover trajectories within the small-sized study area over 200 years. Some sites exhibit changes in land-cover composition with heathland and tree cover increase (ESC, EM), while others are found to be more stable, dominated 1) exclusively by heathland (LEG, W1652), 2) heathland with intermediate proportions of grassland (FOUZ, SIG), or 3) exclusively by grassland (OT). This land-cover composition variability over space and time may be related both to local topography and past grazing activity. The quantification of past vegetation dynamics provides opportunities for bridging the gap between researchers, policy makers and practitioners, and should be taken into account to further investigate the effect of long-term grazing activities on the past and modern plant and landscape diversity.

Quantitative reconstruction of the vegetation of the Qinhuangdao area, western coast of Bohai Sea, North China, during the Little Ice Age

It is widely recognized that the climate of the Little Ice Age (LIA) was generally cold. However, there are differences in the climate response of the vegetation in different regions during the LIA, and high-resolution quantitative research is lacking. Here, we present a high-resolution pollen analysis and the Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm (LRA) based on relative pollen productivity, combined with AMS 14C dating, to quantitatively reconstruct the vegetation response to climate and sea level change on the western coast of Bohai Sea. The main findings are as follows: (1) The coverage of the main plant taxa reconstructed using estimates of relative pollen productivity was closer to the actual vegetation conditions than that based on pollen percentages. (2) Since ∼1250 A.D., the study area was occupied by temperate deciduous broadleaved forest, dominated by Quercus, with a smaller proportion of Pinus forest. The regional vegetation types did not change significantly, but the forest cover decreased gradually from ∼60% in the Middle Warm Period (MWP, 1250–1310 A.D.) to ∼40% in the LIA (1310–1610 A.D.), due to the combined influences of climate and human activities. (3) The composition of herbaceous plants changed substantially during the LIA. In the early LIA (1310–1450 A.D.), the climate became cold and dry and the sea level began to fall, resulting in a substantial increase in the proportion of Poaceae (∼10%). In the middle of the LIA (1450–1610 A.D.), the climate became colder and drier, the sea level fell further, and the lagoon shrank. In response, there was an increase in drought and salt-tolerant Chenopodiaceae (∼10%) and Artemisia (∼5%), a substantial increase in Selaginella sinensis supplied by fluvial processes.

Mid to late Holocene paleoenvironmental changes in the southern forest border of Western Siberia inferred from pollen data

Lacustrine-peat sediments from the Oskino-09 borehole in Western Siberia, which span the last 7.5 cal ka BP, were sampled for pollen and plant macro-remains to better understand regional climatic changes and the position of the forest-steppe border. Analysis of palynological assemblages indicate that meadow-steppe landscapes occupied the largest area in the middle of the Holocene (7.5–4.7 cal ka BP) due to reduced effective moisture during a warm climate interval. A subsequent gradual decrease in temperatures and evaporation led to an increase in effective moisture and emergence of birch groves during 4.7–2.0 cal ka BP, with short interruptions at ca. 3.3 and 2.5 cal ka BP. The expansion of pine forests and the advance of taiga to the south were recorded at ca. 2.0 cal ka BP. There is little evidence for significant human impact on forest-steppe belt evolution, and specifically evidence for anthropogenic deforestation on the southern border of the taiga is lacking. Human activities did not start to impact forests until the emergence of semi-nomadic cattle breeding in the Iron Age. A methodological finding of this paper is that we show that the Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm (LRA) is not always reliable and often overestimates forested areas. • Forests area is overestimated by quantifying landscape assessment in forest-steppe. • Largest meadow-steppe areas were due to reduced effective moisture ca 7.5–4.7 ka BP. • Intensive spread of coniferous in Western Siberian forest-steppe ca 2.0 ka BP. • Human impact on the landscape of Western Siberian forest-steppe was not significant.

The potential of REVEALS-based vegetation reconstructions using pollen records from alluvial floodplains

The two-step Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm—comprising the models REVEALS and LOVE—translates fossil pollen assemblages into quantitative reconstructions of past vegetation cover. The REVEALS model has been applied to lakes and bogs of varied sizes, but application to records from alluvial sites is currently lacking and could further extend these reconstructions to areas where lakes and bogs are absent. In addition, since alluvial sites are often located in areas that experienced early anthropogenic impact, such data will provide more insight into land cover change in the context of agricultural development. In this paper, we test the performance of the REVEALS model using pollen records from multiple alluvial sites obtained from the floodplains of the Belgian Dijle catchment. The modelled vegetation cover is compared to the observed vegetation cover based on a historical land cover map of ca. ad 1775 (ca. 175 cal bp). The discrepancy between the modelled and the observed regional vegetation cover is relatively small and can largely be explained by local differences in land cover surrounding the sites, based on the results of the LOVE model. This study concludes that the LRA approach accurately reconstructs the regional vegetation cover of the river catchment based on pollen obtained from alluvial floodplains, and shows that it is able to reflect major local differences in land cover as well. Including pollen data obtained from alluvial floodplains could lead to a substantial increase in spatial coverage of future LRA-based land cover reconstructions.

Timing and drivers of local to regional scale land-cover changes in the hemiboreal forest zone during the Holocene: A pollen-based study from South Estonia

Current land use and climate change pose a threat to the continued provision of ecosystem services expected from terrestrial land cover. Studies on past land-cover responses to such changes provide valuable information for future decisions. The hemiboreal zone, situated between temperate and boreal biomes, is a natural sensitivity hotspot for land cover change: it contains a continuous distribution limit of several temperate (Quercus robur, Tilia cordata, Fraxinus excelsior, Ulmus glabra, etc.) and some boreal (e.g. Picea abies) tree species. High resolution pollen data from three lakes in South Estonia, a hemiboreal zone in Northern Europe, was used to reconstruct the climate-driven dynamics of vegetation composition, anthropogenic deforestation, species-specific responses to climate cycles, and plant related environmental variables during the Holocene at a local and regional scale. The Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm (LRA) was used to reconstruct the vegetation composition, the Ellenberg Indicator Values for environmental reconstructions, and the Wavelet analysis for detecting cyclic patterns. The major land cover and environmental changes are in good accordance with the climate-based formal tripartite subdivision of the Holocene: a quick succession of tundra, boreal, and nemoral biomes during the Early Holocene, a dominance of temperate, broad-leaved forests during the Middle Holocene, and an expansion of mixed boreal forests and anthropogenic deforestation during the Late Holocene. Several episodes of compositional turnover ranging from a century (e.g., the transition from wet to dry tundra) to several millennia (e.g., the replacement of the temperate deciduous forests with boreal mixed forests) were identified. Our results show that local community changes have a shorter duration than the regional ones. The introduction of slash-and-burn agriculture caused abrupt forest composition changes at a local scale, promoting early successional tree species, even prior to the establishment of a permanently open cultural landscape. The only late successional tree species favoured by slash-and-burn cultivation was Picea abies. However, the application of more permanent cultivation strategies reduced its representation considerably. The determined cyclic changes in the proportions of tree taxa show, that most late successional trees exhibit high frequency (ca 200–400 year) cyclicity, probably reflecting the stand scale regeneration processes. The observed 1600 ± 200 and 1200 ± 200 year cycle changes in the occurrences of Quercus robur, Ulmus glabra and U. laevis, and Picea abies have a possible connection with a 1500 ± 500 year Bond cycle. Most of the tested tree taxa also had a statistically significant correlation with the ca 2200–2500 year Bray solar forcing cycle.

Vegetation change and human-environment interactions in the Qinghai Lake Basin, northeastern Tibetan Plateau, since the last deglaciation

The nature of the interaction between prehistoric humans and their environment, especially the vegetation, has long been of interest. The Qinghai Lake Basin in North China is well-suited to exploring the interactions between prehistoric humans and vegetation in the Tibetan Plateau, because of the comparatively dense distribution of archaeological sites and the ecologically fragile environment. Previous pollen studies of Qinghai Lake have enabled a detailed reconstruction of the regional vegetation, but they have provided relatively little information on vegetation change within the Qinghai Lake watershed. To address the issue we conducted a pollen-based vegetation reconstruction for an archaeological site (YWY), located on the southern shore of Qinghai Lake. We used high temporal-resolution pollen records from the YWY site and from Qinghai Lake, spanning the interval since the last deglaciation (15.3 kyr BP to the present) to quantitatively reconstruct changes in the local and regional vegetation using Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm models. The results show that, since the lateglacial, spruce forest grew at high altitudes in the surrounding mountains, while the lakeshore environment was occupied mainly by shrub-steppe. From the lateglacial to the middle Holocene, coniferous woodland began to expand downslope and reached the YWY site at ∼ 7.1 kyr BP. The living environment of the local small groups of Paleolithic-Epipaleolithic humans (during 15.3–13.1 kyr BP and 9–6.4 kyr BP) changed from shrub-steppe to coniferous forest–steppe. The pollen record shows no evidence of pronounced changes in the vegetation community corresponding to human activity. However, based on a comparison of the local and regional vegetation reconstructions, low values of biodiversity and a significant increase in two indicators of vegetation degradation, Chenopodiaceae and Rosaceae, suggest that prehistoric hunters-gatherers likely disturbed the local vegetation during ∼ 9.0–6.4 kyr BP. Our findings are a preliminary attempt to study human-environment interactions at Paleolithic-Epipaleolithic sites in the region, and they contribute to ongoing environmental archaeology research in the Tibetan Plateau.

Spatially Continuous Land-Cover Reconstructions Through the Holocene in Southern Sweden

Climate change and human activities influence the development of ecosystems, with human demand of ecosystem services altering both land use and land cover. Fossil pollen records provide time series of vegetation characteristics, and the aim of this study was to create spatially continuous reconstructions of land cover through the Holocene in southern Sweden. The Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm (LRA) was applied to obtain quantitative reconstructions of pollen-based vegetation cover at local scales, accounting for pollen production, dispersal, and deposition mechanisms. Pollen-based local vegetation estimates were produced from 41 fossil pollen records available for the region. A comparison of 17 interpolation methods was made and evaluated by comparing with current land cover. Simple kriging with cokriging using elevation was selected to interpolate the local characteristics of past land cover, to generate more detailed reconstructions of trends and degree of variability in time and space than previous studies based on pollen data representing the regional scale. Since the Mesolithic, two main processes have acted to reshape the land cover of southern Sweden, originally mostly covered by broad-leaved forests. The natural distribution limit of coniferous forest has moved southward during periods with colder climate and retracted northward during warmer periods, and human expansion in the area and agrotechnological developments has led to a gradually more open landscape, reaching maximum openness at the beginning of the 20th century. The recent intensification of agriculture has led to abandonment of less fertile agricultural fields and afforestation with conifer forest.

The environment they lived in: anthropogenic changes in local and regional vegetation composition in eastern Fennoscandia during the Neolithic

Understanding about regional versus local changes in vegetation is critical in answering archaeological questions, in particular at a time when humans are assumed to have caused higher disturbances at local scales rather than regional scales; this is the case during the Neolithic. The aim of this paper is to assess the impact of Neolithic land use on regional and local vegetation dynamics, plant composition and disturbance processes (e.g. fire) in eastern Fennoscandia. We apply the Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm (LRA) to high-resolution pollen records from three lacustrine sediment cores that cover the Neolithic period. We calculate changes in vegetation composition and the rate of plant compositional change. Fire dynamics are estimated as an indicator of land use, although fire can result from both natural and anthropogenic disturbances. Our results show that during the Early Neolithic, changes were mainly driven by natural and climate-induced factors and vegetation composition and fire activity were similar at both regional and local scales. From ca. 4000 bc onwards, trends in vegetation and fire dynamics start to differ between regional and local scales. This is due to local land uses that are overshadowed at the regional scale by climate-induced factors. The use of the LOVE model in pollen analyses is therefore very useful to highlight local land uses that are not visible by using REVEALS.

Did long‐term fire control the coniferous boreal forest composition of the northern Ural region (Komi Republic, Russia)?

The objective of this study is to document these interactions in the Komi Republic during the Holocene.LocationYaksha, Vychegda river basin, Republic of Komi, Russia.TaxonPlantae, gymnosperms, angiosperms.MethodsTwo palaeoecological approaches are combined, based (1) on pollen (this study) and charcoal analysis (recomputed from our previous analysis) applied to cores from two peatlands and (2) on a REVEALS model (a part of the Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm “LRA”) applied to six regional pollen cores in order to obtain a regional estimate of vegetation cover during the Holocene.ResultsThe pollen diagram produced locally from Yaksha was compared with the regional vegetation cover determined by REVEALS. Taxa such as Abies sp. and Pinus spp. showed differences between the two approaches, but vegetation signals remain qualitatively consistent. From 10,000 to 6,000 cal. yr BP, the forest was mainly a light taiga (composed of Pinus sylvestris and Betula spp.) and low fire activity was recorded. From 6,000 to 3,500 cal. yr BP, a dark taiga (composed of Picea spp., Abies sibirica and Pinus sibirica) was established due to favourable climatic conditions, despite higher fire activity. From 3,500 cal. yr BP onwards, the continuous increase in fire activity allowed for a gradual return of light taiga, Betula spp., likely reinforced by human activities. The dynamics of Picea spp. and Abies sp. were asynchronous between the sites. For Picea spp., the hypothesis of local inter‐site expansion distributed along stream corridors is supported by the data. For Abies sp., a bias in REVEALS, and in climate cooling may explain disparities between sites.Main conclusionsWe found evidence that in the early and mid‐Holocene, vegetation dynamics were probably more influenced by climate, as fire activity was low. During the late Holocene, fire activity and geomorphology, eventually augmented by human activities, increased in influence on vegetation dynamics and led to the predominance of the light taiga forest up to the present.

Comments on Marquer et al. (2020) by Theuerkauf and Couwenberg (2020) revisit two issues important for pollen-based reconstruction of past vegetation with the Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm (LRA;Sugita, 2007a,2007b) and related models: the selection of pollen dispersal model and the appropriate use of pollen productivity estimates. We are aware of those issues, and our paper addresses those questions and advises for caution and necessary future steps to improve model-based reconstruction of vegetation in mountain environments and elsewhere. This reply restates briefly some of the important take-home messages fromour study and presents our suggestion and proposal in response toTheuerkauf and Couwenberg’s comments.

Relative pollen productivities of the major plant taxa of subtropical evergreen–deciduous mixed woodland in China

ABSTRACTQuantifying the relationship between pollen and vegetation is an essential step in the pollen‐based quantitative reconstruction of past vegetation cover. In this study, we use the Extended R‐Value (ERV) model and a modern dataset of pollen (collected from moss polsters) and related vegetation from 50 sites in the Daba Mountains (subtropical China) to (i) estimate the relevant source area of pollen (RSAP) of the moss samples and the relative pollen productivities (RPPs) of nine major plant taxa‐characteristic of the region, and (ii) evaluate the obtained RPPs. The RSAP estimates of moss polsters vary between 225 and 610 m depending on the ERV submodels and models of pollen dispersal and deposition used. The RPP estimates are different from values published in previous studies from temperate and subtropical China. This may be explained by differences in methodology, climate and vegetation (species composition and spatial distribution), of which vegetation is probably the most important factor. The ranking of the RPP estimates for the nine taxa is Pinus > Juglandaceae > D − Quercus (deciduous Quercus) > Poaceae > Rosaceae > Cyperaceae > Anacardiaceae > Castanea > Fabaceae. We use a ‘leave‐one‐out’ cross‐validation strategy and the Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm (LRA) for pollen‐based reconstruction of regional and local plant cover to evaluate the ERV model‐based RPP estimates. Both the REVEALS (Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance from Large Sites)‐based and the LOVE (LOcal Vegetation Estimates)‐based plant cover using the RPP estimates are closer to the modern vegetation composition than pollen percentages, thus confirming the applicability of the ERV model and the LRA approach in subtropical China.

Quantitative landscape reconstruction and erosion history during the past 1,100\xa0years in the Skogaryd Research Catchment, southern Sweden

A sediment sequence from a small forest lake in southwestern Sweden was investigated to explore the effects of forestry and land-use on catchment erosion and delivery of organic and minerogenic matter to the lake. Catchment-scale vegetation changes during the last 1,100 years were reconstructed quantitatively at 50-year resolution using pollen analysis and the Landscape reconstruction algorithm (LRA). Variations in terrestrial organic matter input to lake sediments were assessed by total organic carbon (TOC) content and carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratios. Changes in minerogenic matter were analysed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) scanning. The results show that Skogaryd was not intensively used for agriculture throughout the past 1,100 years, but its land-use changes were very sensitive to societal changes. Between ca. ad 950 and 1350, local land-use was characterized by small-scale agricultural activities associated with the Medieval expansion, and enhanced soil erosion was recorded by increased K, Ti and Rb deposition. Around ad 1350 much of the farmland was abandoned, most likely in response to outbreaks of plague. The abandonment of farmland caused increased coniferous woodland cover and lower soil erosion. From the 16th century land-use expanded and gradually intensified, concurrent with a population increase documented in the study area between ca. ad 1600 and 1850. Intensive exploitation of the forest led to soil erosion and increased terrestrial organic and minerogenic matter export to the lake. These processes peaked with the artificial drainage of a nearby wetland for agricultural purposes. During the 20th century, modern forestry management started with the plantation of conifers, and soil erosion declined.

Pollen-based reconstruction of Holocene land-cover in mountain regions: Evaluation of the Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm in the Vicdessos valley, northern Pyrenees, France

Long-term perspectives on climate- and human-induced shifts in plant communities and tree line in mountains are often inferred from fossil pollen records. However, various factors, such as complex patterns of orographic wind fields and abundant insect-pollinated plants in higher altitudes, make pollen-based reconstruction in mountain regions difficult.Over the last decade the Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm (LRA) - a model-based approach in reconstruction of vegetation – has been successfully applied in various parts of the globe. However, evaluation of its effectiveness in mountain ranges is still limited. The present study assesses the extent to which the LRA approach helps quantify the local changes in vegetation cover at Vicdessos valley in northern French Pyrenees as a case study. In the study area well-dated sediment cores are available from eight bogs and ponds, 6–113 m in radius, located above the current tree line. We first use a simple simulation experiment to evaluate the way how pollen records from “landscape islands” (mountain tops and plateaus) would represent local vegetation and to clarify important factors affecting the LRA-based reconstruction in a mountainous region. This study then uses pollen records from these sites and vegetation and land-cover data both within a 50-km radius around the Vicdessos valley and within a 2-km radius from each site for evaluation of the REVEALS- and LOVE-based reconstruction of the regional and local plant cover, respectively, in the LRA approach. The land-cover data are complied for coniferous trees, broadleaved trees and non-forested areas from the CORINE and historical maps in three time windows: 1960–1970, 1990–2000 and 2000–2013.Major findings are as follows. (1) Accuracy of the regional vegetation estimates affects the reliability of the LRA-based reconstruction of vegetation within a 2-km radius; use of the CORINE data as input to the LOVE model improves reliability of the results over the use of the REVEALS-based estimates of regional vegetation. This implies that a systematic selection of pollen data only from sites above the tree line is problematic for estimating regional vegetation, and thus the entire LRA process. (2) Selection of the dispersal models for pollen transport (i.e. the Langrangian Stochastic Model vs. Gaussian Plume Model) does not affect significantly the LRA-based estimates at both the regional and local scales in the study area. (3) The LRA approach improves the pollen-based reconstruction of local vegetation compared to pollen percentage alone in northern Pyrenees. Although further empirical and simulation studies are necessary, our results emphasize the importance of site selection for the LRA-based reconstruction of vegetation in mountain regions.

Relative pollen productivity estimates for alpine meadow vegetation, northeastern Tibetan Plateau

A promising method of reconstructing past vegetation from pollen records uses mathematical models of the relationship between pollen and vegetation. These can be calibrated using the extended R-value (ERV) approach on datasets of modern pollen assemblages and related vegetation surveys. This study presents the results of calibrating the pollen-vegetation models for non-arboreal pollen types in alpine meadow habitats on the Tibetan Plateau. Surface soil samples were analysed for pollen and the surrounding vegetation was recorded at 30 randomly located sites in the Zoige basin, northeastern Tibetan Plateau. ERV analysis found that the most reliable results were obtained when using ERV sub-models 1 and 2, and distance-weighting the vegetation data by applying the taxon-specific Prentice–Sutton method. The relevant source area of pollen for these soil samples was found to be ca. 200 m. Relative pollen productivities (RPP) of 15 non-arboreal taxa were estimated relative to Cyperaceae (RPPCyp). The taxa can be divided into three groups according to their RPPs, those with high RPPCyp values > 1.68 (Thalictrum, Artemisia, Caryophyllaceae, Chenopodiaceae and Plantago), those with moderate values (0.42–0.62) (Taraxacum-type, Apiaceae, Polygonum and Aster-type), and those with low values < 0.4 (Gentianaceae, Potentilla, Brassicaceae, Saussurea-type and Poaceae). The RPP values obtained from our study differ from those of previous studies in other parts of China, and form the basis for future reconstruction of palaeovegetation on the Tibetan Plateau through model-based methods, such as the Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm, or Multiple Scenario Approach.

The environmental impact of cultural change: Palynological and quantitative land cover reconstructions for the last two millennia in northern Poland

This paper presents the first quantitative past land cover reconstructions for northern Poland using the Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm (LRA), interpreted alongside traditional percentage pollen data and historical sources. These data are used to evaluate the impact of cultural change on past vegetation and land-use in northern Poland during the last 2000 years. Vegetation change and land-use are apparent corresponding to the late Roman Iron Age (1st to 3rd centuries), Migration Period (4th–7th centuries), early Medieval (8th to early-13th centuries) and late medieval (early-13th to mid-15th centuries). The Roman Iron Age is characterised by significant land cover estimates for meadowland, likely part of a broad spectrum agricultural strategy. Widespread depopulation and woodland regrowth characterise the Migration Period, followed by the progressive clearance of woodland from the 7th/8th centuries corresponding to Slavic colonisation. Polish control of the region from the mid-10th century is accompanied by intensification in agricultural land-use. However, archaeological evidence for increasing settlement instability during the 11th/12th centuries is not obviously apparent in the palynological data. This likely reflects the sporadic nature and uneven impact of conflict, but also the difficulty in resolving short-term events in the palynological record. Significant woodland clearance occurred prior to the crusades, with the consequence that there is no clearly identifiable horizon of significant landscape change associated with the arrival of the Teutonic Order. However, large tracts of woodland survived in sparsely populated frontier zones and in areas with poor agricultural soils, managed as part of an extensive provisioning network covering the Teutonic Order's state.

Quantified moorland vegetation and assessment of the role of burning over the past five millennia

AbstractAimsTo apply the Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm (LRA) to pollen count data from multiple sites to estimate local vegetation abundance and compare with charcoal‐derived records of burning.LocationExmoor, southwest England, UK.MethodsPollen count data from 16 sites were transformed to estimates of distance‐weighted vegetation abundance using the LRA (REVEALS and LOVE models), correcting for bias in pollen production and dispersal. Charcoal concentration data from six sites were normalized using Box‐Cox transformation to produce z‐scores. Moving‐window correlation was undertaken to compare pollen percentage values for key taxa (Calluna, Poaceae) and localized burning. Estimates of distance‐vegetation abundance (LRA output) and time‐averaged charcoal z‐scores were compared to assess the role of burning as a driver for upland vegetation cover.ResultsComparison of pollen percentage and normalized charcoal z‐scores show little correlation between vegetation cover and burning. Estimates of distance‐weighted vegetation abundance and normalized charcoal data show relationships between vegetation change and burning at four of the six sites. The relationships are site‐specific: three sites suggest burning promoted grass‐dominated vegetation, at one site burning promoted heather‐dominated vegetation, and in two sites there is no apparent relationship.ConclusionsThe patterning of vegetation within uplands is a crucial part of ecosystem service delivery, and contemporary and future management benefits from understanding of ‘long‐term’ development, i.e. patterns over millennia. The correction of biases within pollen production and dispersal to produce local vegetation estimates has demonstrated spatial heterogeneity in vegetation cover on Exmoor that is not otherwise evident in the pollen percentage data (which retain a strong influence of the regional vegetation cover). The relationship between LRA‐derived vegetation cover and burning is not apparent in comparisons between pollen percentage data and charcoal records. This implies that studies that use pollen proportional data alone can misrepresent the relationship between vegetation cover and fire. This study demonstrates that fire has been an important part of the development of this cultural landscape.
